Ice Safety on Lake Winnebago

January 13, 2010

I’ve noticed a few shacks on Lake Winnebago already as more people head to the lake for ice fishing and prepare for sturgeon spearing.  Before you head out, make sure you read Fox 11’s “Warning: Open water on Lake Winnebago”:

“NEENAH/MENASHA – Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue officials are warning of open water on the north end of Lake Winnebago.

The department asked people to use extreme caution in the areas where the lake empties into the Fox River in Neenah and Menasha. Over the weekend, crews were called to the area three times. They had to rescue a snowmobiler during one of those calls.

While overall ice conditions on the lake are good except areas near the river mouths, officials said a large pressure crack extends from Buoy 100 near the mouth of the Menasha River, southeast for an unknown distance.”

The Wisconsin DNR has also posted helpful tips for staying safe on the ice this season.
