Lake Winnebago Update

January 18, 2010

There are only 26 days left until the opening day of sturgeon spearing on Lake Winnebago.  I took a ride on the ice this afternoon and the lake was hopping with snowmobiles, four wheelers, and armchairs turned into sleds to be pulled behind vehicles.  I took the marked ice road from Sherwood off of the boat landing on Windswept Lane (right off of State Park Rd.) and drove out a few miles to check out the conditions.  Four-wheel drive is a must since the wind has created huge snow drifts, otherwise the ice appeared to be very safe along the tree line.  It has been a little foggy the past few days, so the visibility isn’t great, but the trees along the lake are beautiful and covered in frost.  I didn’t see too many shanties out on the lake yet–there were just a few in view, but in the next few weeks the lake should be covered.
