Sturgeon Spearing 2010, Day 4

February 16, 2010

Today was yet another day of successful sturgeon spearing.  The good weather continued into today with cloudy skies and a bit of wind, but temperatures right around 30 degrees.  The water clarity is still good along the north end of the lake according to spearers and many have seen quite a few sturgeon pass through their holes.  To the left is a photo of spearer Toby VanHandel of Kimberly who speared this 159.4 lb., 77.1″ F2 female sturgeon off the lower High Cliff area.  The sturgeon was registered at the Town of Harrison registration station.  Crowds gathered to take a look at the sturgeon and hear Toby’s story.

Spearer Terry Hermus speared this 145.5 lb., 77″ female sturgeon (lower left photo) right off of Firelane 8 and registered at Waverly Beach.  I was lucky enough to catch both of these sturgeon go through the registration stations and had a good time listening to the stories.

It looks like the season will at least run through tomorrow, so I’ll bring you more coverage from the lake then.  For more photos, click on the photos to the right or the “more photos” link.  Good luck tomorrow!
