Update from Ron Bruch on January 2, 2011 & 2011 Sturgeon Spearing Regulations

January 2, 2011

It’s finally here!  Got an email from Ron Bruch a few hours ago which included the 2011 Sturgeon Spearing Regulation & Info Pamphlet.  For updates like this, join the Winnebago Lake Sturgeon blog on Facebook or subscribe for email updates (click on the link in the column to the right)!  Read what Ron has to say below.

“Dear Winnebago Sturgeon Enthusiasts,

Happy New Year! Sturgeon spearers from across Wisconsin and beyond are looking forward to the 2011 season now less than six weeks away opening Saturday February 12. A record number of people purchased licenses this year so opening weekend will likely be very busy around the lakes. I have details on license sales, harvest caps, seasons, and important sturgeon spearing regulations in the attached 2011 Winnebago Sturgeon Spearing Regulation Pamphlet. In the pamphlet I have also provided an interim summary of the results we have collected thus far from our long-term sturgeon sonic telemetry (Tracking) study – fascinating information! Finally, I also have listed information about the upcoming Sturgeon for Tomorrow banquets. The first of three being held prior to the spearing season is next weekend already, January 8, in Fond du Lac. All the details you need to get your tickets are listed in the pamphlet in the Sturgeon for Tomorrow section.

Hope you had a nice start to the New Year. I’ll be back with more information prior to the start of the season.”

With all of this cold weather (minus a few warm days), the ice is quickly accumulating on Lake Winnebago.  For a rough idea on how thick the ice is, follow this link (as noted on the site, the data is not verified so please always be careful on the ice!).

This year I’m trying to photograph a wide variety of sturgeon spearing decoys, so here is a poll to get things rolling:

Here’s to a great year and another season of sturgeon spearing!
