An update from the lake with only 30 days to go!

January 13, 2011

I finally got a chance to go out on Lake Winnebago today!  There are a few shanties here and there, but most of the action is along the shoreline.  I went snowmobiling for awhile between Waverly Beach (Menasha) and Habor Bar (Stockbridge) and the ice was smooth the entire way.  It looks like they’re getting ready to mark the ice roads on the north end of the lake, but I didn’t see any trees up as of today.

I stopped for lunch at Waverly and learned that they will be getting sturgeon spearing sweatshirts in this weekend or early next week and the pint glasses will be soon to follow.  The Fishtale Inn, Countryside Bar, and Wendt’s also have items for sale already–I am unsure about the other bars, but will let you know when I hear something!

The next Sturgeon for Tomorrow Banquet is coming up quick.  The Main Chapter (East Shore/Kiel) will hold it’s banquet on January 22.  Call David Vogds at 920.921.3701 for tickets and details.

Can’t wait until February 12 to see a sturgeon?  Head to the Heckrodt Wetland Reserve in Menasha where you’ll find two 5 1/2 year old lake sturgeon in the nature center.  Ledge View Nature Center & Park in Chilton also has a lake sturgeon exhibit.

Check back this weekend for another update–I’m meeting with someone tomorrow that sells sturgeon spears in Kaukauna and will be sure to post some photos and info (I hear they’re pretty fancy spears).  Please leave a comment or drop me an email if you know of anyone selling spears!
