Sturgeon Belt Buckle & Sturgeon in the News

January 19, 2011

Sturgeon Belt Buckle by Steph Wisnet
Pictured above is my version of a lake sturgeon belt buckle that I made in an Intro to Metals class last spring at UWM out of copper.  Thought I would share it with you even though I am most definitely not an expert in metalsmithing.  I had never seen a sturgeon buckle before (maybe because they are fairly impractical) so I thought I’d give it a go.  I also have a few articles to share with you:

The Post Crescent recently published an article and video on spearing stories from last year’s season:

Fox Valley fisherman relish tradition of sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago

I came across a document on the history of lake sturgeon and sturgeon spearing from 1903 to 2005 on the Wisconsin DNR website that everyone should take a look at–it’s really interesting!  According to the document, the first regulated sturgeon spearing season began in 1932 when tags were only $0.05 each and each person was allowed 5 sturgeon.  The history shows just how closely the lake sturgeon population has been monitored over the last 100 years.

History of the Lake Winnebago Sturgeon Fishery

The Journal Sentinel posted an article on the growing population of lake sturgeon in the Milwaukee River:

Large sturgeon caught in Milwaukee River

The DNR announced that the lake sturgeon quota for the spearing season on Black Lake in Michigan will be 7 sturgeon.  Read more below:

24 days until opening day 2011!  Are you ready for the season?  Purchase any new gear this year?
