Update from Ron Bruch on Feb. 24, 2011

February 24, 2011

This update has been posted with permission from Ron Bruch and the Wisconsin DNR:

“Winnebago Sturgeon Spearing Report – Thursday February 24

See Sturgeon Vignette attached: “What have our Winnebago sturgeon spear harvest rates been over the years?”

A seventy eight percent increase in harvest from yesterday to today! Nine fish yesterday – 16 fish today; 1 fish over 100 lbs. We need 179 more adult females to pop the 90% system-wide closure trigger. This season will undoubtedly last the full 16 days so barring some miraculous rush of fish registration the next two days, the season should run through 12:30 PM Sunday February 27.

Largest fish of the day was 113.6 lb, 71.5″ F1 registered at Stockbridge Station by Robert Schmitz of Chilton.

Totals by harvest category (click here for attached daily harvest report for Feb. 24, 2011):

Lake Winnebago: 1 Juvenile Females
10 Adult Females
5 Male
16 Lake Winnebago Total for the Day – 1024 total for season

1357 System-wide Total for the Season

Upriver Lakes season is closed for 2011.

Be safe out there.

Till tomorrow,

Ronald M. Bruch, PhD
Upper Fox-Wolf Fisheries Work Unit Supervisor, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources”
