Although the 2011 sturgeon spearing season is over, I have to backtrack a little and post the update from Ron Bruch for Saturday, Feb. 26 since I somehow missed that one!  Scroll down for Ron’s update for Sunday, the closing day of the season.  Check back for more info from the season, photos, and info on sturgeon spawning which is coming up next.

This update has been posted with permission from Ron Bruch and the Wisconsin DNR:

“Winnebago Sturgeon Spearing Report – Saturday February 26

See Sturgeon Vignette attached: Sturgeon for Tomorrow – the Largest Citizens’ Sturgeon Advocacy Group in the World

I’ve mentioned the organization Sturgeon for Tomorrow numerous times in the various vignettes I’ve sent out this season. Today’s vignette gives a little more information about this great organization, the largest citizens’ sturgeon advocacy group in the world. This group has been a key factor in the restoration of our Winnebago lake sturgeon stock over the last 40 years, and continues to be a critical part of the Winnebago sturgeon culture and management program today. Their signature activity is a series of five “Sturgeon Banquets” they hold around the Winnebago Lakes in January, February, March, and September. There are two banquets out of five scheduled for 2011 that sturgeon enthusiasts can still attend – March 19 in Oshkosh, and September 10 in Fremont. If you haven’t already done so – get your tickets and take part in this great tradition of the Winnebago sturgeon culture, and support this great organization.

One day to go in the 2011 Winnebago sturgeon spearing season…………25 fish today; 2 fish over 100 lbs. The 2011 Winnebago sturgeon spearing season will end at 12:30 PM Sunday February 27. As usual spearers have until 1:30 PM to get to an open registration station with their fish.

Largest fish of the day was 112.5 lb, 67.7″ F2 registered at Jerry’s Bar Registration Station in Oshkosh by Benjamin Berger of Omro.

Totals by harvest category:

Lake Winnebago: 3 Juvenile Females
13 Adult Females
9 Male
25 Lake Winnebago Total for the Day – 1068 total for season

1401 System-wide Total for the Season

Sturgeon Spearing Report 26 Feb 2011

We’ll wrap this up tomorrow,
