Sturgeon Spawning Update from Ron Bruch

April 15, 2011

Got an update from Ron Bruch today and it sounds like the sturgeon are beginning to spawn in some areas.  The following update has been posted with permission from Ron Bruch and the Wisconsin DNR:

“Update on upper Fox and Wolf River Sturgeon Activity……..

Carl Mesman, our Law Enforcement Sturgeon General, reported that sturgeon began spawning on the upper Fox River yesterday at Berlin and Princeton.  The fish in the upper Fox River are much less numerous than those that use the Wolf River sites (hundreds as opposed to 18,000+), and they generally spawn about a week ahead of the Wolf River fish.  Spring water temps in the upper Fox are ahead of the Wolf which brings the fish on earlier there.

On the Wolf – no spawning yet, but many fish are porpoising adjacent to Bamboo Bend in Shiocton.  People can see fish porpoising there now, but they are not on the shorelines yet doing their thing.  I don’t expect fish to begin spawning on the Wolf until we get through this current cold spell and see a warming again of water temperatures.  The water temps are just barely below where they need to be to induce spawning in the New London and Shiocton areas, and quite a ways below where they need to be upstream in Shawano.  I believe we are still looking at sometime next week at the soonest for spawning to commence on the Wolf, although these fish have made a liar out of me many times before.

Stay tuned – We will keep you informed on what is happening with the sturgeon spawn.”
