Sturgeon Spawning Update from Ron Bruch on April 18, 2011

April 18, 2011

Although a few sturgeon were spotted spawning over the weekend, it looks like spawning will be on hold for a little longer yet. According to Ron Bruch, the water temperatures have cooled down again as temperatures have been and will be low this week. I am most definitely not looking forward to the snow and sleet predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday, but after we make it through that temperatures should start rising again. I could go for a nice and sunny 85 degree day right about now!

The following update has been posted with permission from Ron Bruch and the Wisconsin DNR:

“Wolf River Sturgeon Spawning Update….18 April 2011

The water temps on the Wolf River continue to go down with the cold weather, down now to 42 degrees F, which all but eliminate the probability that the main run of spawning lake sturgeon on the Wolf River will start anytime soon. The few fish that we worked last Saturday were early spawners reacting to the warming water temps we experienced early last week – literally no more than a half dozen females that began ovulating – approximately 3994 females to go. The rest of these females likely won’t start their individual ovulation cycles until the water warms back up into the low 50s. Given the weather forecast this week, this may not happen until week’s end or even after Easter. So we wait……….I’ll send out my next report when we begin seeing some significant pre-spawn porpoising activity again.”
